Dear Families,
Thank you to all those who attended our Classroom ‘Drop In’/Welcome Barbeque last week. We enjoyed seeing so many families at school, taking the opportunity to see their child’s classroom and to meet the teacher. We encourage you to stay connected to school and to your child’s teacher. Keeping an active connection to your child’s learning has been shown to lead to improved academic and wellbeing outcomes for students of all ages. Parents are the first educators of their children, and our school is very keen to support families to stay engaged as their child moves through school.
Our school seeks to build and maintain partnerships to connect learning between home and school. Our Launching into Learning (LIL) program is for families with children up to the age of five and it is completely free to access. It offers a variety of activities each week. See inside today’s newsletter for our LIL timetable. Our Learning in Families Together (LIFT) program provides support to help you know what your child is learning at school – and how to support them with this at home. We will be offering regular activities and session through LIFT this year. LIFT will also be running some volunteer induction sessions for family members who are keen to come in and help in their child’s class, on excursions or in school activities. These sessions will be short and give information about how we can support volunteers on our school site. Look for more information about these sessions soon or contact our LIFT Co-ordinator, Mrs Alison Norris through the School Office.
Other ways to stay connected to school and your child’s learning include:
*Regular check ins with your child’s teacher by popping into the classroom before school
*Sharing learning through the SeeSaw App (please see your child’s teacher for how to connect)
*Reading our school newsletter on Schoolzine (please ask our School Office to connect you)
*Catching up with school news on our School Facebook page
*Coming along to our regular assemblies
*Sharing a phone call with your child’s teacher or with senior staff
*Coming along to a School Association meeting to find out what’s happening at school
* Discussing samples of your child’s learning with their teacher
*Becoming a volunteer for excursions or activities
School Values
From our school values, we draw the behaviours that everyone in our school community agree to show while on our school site. Teachers support students to develop their awareness and understanding of our values and of the behaviours expected across our school. Our values become our touchstone in having conversations with students about what is expected and how this can be shown. They are also central to discussions with students haven’t shown our values and need to reflect on what positive behaviour choices would have looked like. School regularly acknowledges students who are showing our values through giving out golden tickets. A golden ticket draw occurs at our regular assemblies. Assemblies also provide an opportunity to celebrate students from each class who have been a values champion.
School welcomes volunteers and visitors and recognises the role they play in enhancing learning for students. Volunteers and visitors help directly to support and promote a safe and respectful school environment by behaving in a way that shows our school values. Respectful school volunteer and visitor behaviour is critical in ensuring that the school environment supports child, student and staff wellbeing. Volunteer and visitor behaviour expectations also apply to parents bringing their child into school or collecting them at the end of the day. Importantly, we ask that if you see or know of an issue occurring for a child in class or in the playground that you report this to staff and do not approach students to discuss this with them.
Please read our school’s Respectful Schools Volunteer and Visitor Policy which outlines acceptable behaviour of Volunteers and Visitors in our school.
Opportunities to connect to others
Congratulations to our Year 6 students who represented our school and participated in a segment with ABC Radio while they were broadcasting from Brighton. Look out for more about their achievement within today’s newsletter.
Next Wednesday, 6 March, our Year 3-4 students will attend Mona to take part in the 24 Carrot Gardens Carnival. Students will be able to enjoy musical performances and entertainment, art activities including face painting and edible necklaces, and, have morning tea and lunch provided for them. Students will need to return their Minor Major Excursion Forms to attend the excursion. We look forward to sharing their thoughts and photos from this day.
Our Year 3 – 6 students will next Friday (8th March) have their school Athletics Carnival. More information is provided in today’s newsletter.

Brighton Primary School Association
Our School Association works together to promote and provide a positive environment at our school. It includes parents, school staff and community working with the school’s Principal to support learners and to benefit the school community. Our School Association fosters co-operation between staff, students, parents and community, reviews school policies and assists with fundraising. Meetings are held once per term and all parents are warmly invited to attend.
Annual General Meeting
Notice is given that the Annual General Meeting of the Brighton Primary School Association will be held on Monday 18th March at 4:30 in the School Admin Block. This meeting will see reports presented on School Association activities and school progress from 2023, and, put in place our 2024 School Association Committee. There will also be election of office bearers for 2024.
Nomination forms for parent representatives and community representatives on the Committee will be available from the School Office from early next week.
National Student Wellbeing Program (NSWP) Funding
During Term 4 last year, our School Association partnered with school staff to apply for National Student Wellbeing funding. The National Student Wellbeing Program (NSWP) supports the wellbeing of students and school communities through pastoral care services and student support strategies. We are pleased to share that Brighton Primary was successful in receiving funding and that this will support a School Chaplain to work at school for three days a week this year. The funding is for 2024 – 2027.
On Wedneday 13th March the whole school will be having a Free Dress Day. This will be for our Easter Raffle instead of a gold coin donation we are asking for an easter egg / chocolate. Raffle tickets will be sent home shortly, the price will be $1.00 per ticket.
Thank you for your continued support.
On Thursday 22nd February we went up to the Brighton Post Office to meet ABC Radio Hobart. They asked us questions including what do you like about Brighton Primary School and what are we looking forward to about Brighton High School. They asked us what we wanted to see in our Brighton community. We said we would like to see netball courts, a public pool and a cricket field.
We were all nervous but we found out that it wasn’t that bad at all!
Could all Validation Forms and Minor Major Excursion Forms, please be returned to the school office as soon as possible.
Thank you
Classroom Drop in and Welcome Barbecue. We had a large number of families come along to our Classroom Drop in and Welcome Barbecue last week. There was information available for families in our classrooms and outside in the courtyard. Thank you to all families who were able to attend.
24 Carrot Kitchen-Garden Program
Our Grade 3 and 4 students have now had their first experience in our Kitchen Garden Program. We have a new Team running the Program this year – Kristie Bennett is our Kitchen Specialist (who also continues her other role in the school) and we have a great new Garden Specialist, Gabriel Paiva Lago. Kristie and Gabriel have worked hard to prepare the kitchen and the garden ready to start teaching the students how they grow vegetables and herbs from seeds to then create delicious plates of food to share with friends and family. Over the last two weeks students have either made Bush spiced tomato chutney and damper or lemon myrtle biscuits. There has been a resounding thumbs up to how good these tasted and it has been great seeing some students trying new foods and flavours for the first time. Every grade 3 and 4 student will have a session each fortnight which incorporates some time in the kitchen and some time in the garden and then sitting down and eating the creations together.
Next Wednesday, 6th March, all the Grade 3 and 4 students will participate in the 24 Carrot Summer Carnival on the Mona Lawns. There are 24 schools in the 24 Carrot Program now and these carnivals have been happening for around ten years. It will be a celebration of the Program getting started for the new year featuring singing and dancing, storytelling and art and craft activities such as making edible necklaces. We will also be eating some delicious morning tea and lunch prepared by Mona. Students will not be going into the Mona Museum for any reason. Please make sure Minor excursion permission forms have been returned to the office by Tuesday at the latest.
