It has been a busy start to Term One at our school. We have enjoyed welcoming both familiar faces and some new faces to our school community. Students have been proudly wearing their school uniform, been keen to meet their teacher, to learn the routines of their new classroom, to catch up with friends and to make some new friendships.
Thank you to all school staff who worked with great effort in the weeks before school returned to ensure classrooms have been inviting learning spaces for our families and students.
We appreciated that many families took up the chance to come in on the Wednesday afternoon before school to see their child’s classroom and meet their teacher. This helped students to be prepared for the first day, knowing where to go and to be confident in greeting their teacher and settling in.
Families will be offered another opportunity to visit their child’s classroom and talk with teachers next Tuesday afternoon, 20th February, when we hold our Classroom Drop in and BBQ from 3pm to 4pm. You are warmly invited to come along and enjoy a sausage sizzle, icy poles, classroom visit and a chat with staff. To help us cater for the afternoon, please let our School Office know by the end of next Monday 19th February if you will be joining us.
Staffing
Several new staff members have joined our school team this year. We welcome Chloe Suckling who is teaching Year 5. Chloe is working Monday to Thursday each week and Shannon Walter joins us to teach this class on Fridays. We also welcome Kate Petraitis who has joined our Year 3 team.
School has welcomed back Kathleen O’Meara who is sharing a Prep class with Amanda Stephenson, and, Luc Aitchison and Alex Harpham who are sharing a Year 6 class. Mr Daft and Mr Henderson have returned from taking leave in Term 4 last year. We congratulate Haylee Woolley who was married over the school holiday break and is now Haylee Latham. 4 Triffitt is enjoying having Rhys Brimblecombe, UTAS intern teacher, learning alongside their classroom teacher.
Next week, we welcome Belinda Harback to our leadership team. She will lead our Year 1-2 teaching team.
Our school benefits form additional social work time this year. We will have a School Social Worker for four days of the week. We welcome Jess Jackson who will be social worker for us on Wednesdays and Fridays, working alongside Hannah Holmes who will be with us on Mondays and Tuesdays.
More information about our School Support Team will be shared in our next newsletter.
Who do I talk to?
Our school uses the Seesaw App to share class activities and your child’s learning with you. Seesaw will often be the way that your child’s teacher will share assembly dates, excursion information or reminders about class and school events with you. Seesaw is not used to discuss your child’s behaviour. Parents and carers are asked to make contact with their child’s teacher, by phone or in person or to speak with a member of our leadership team, if the conversation is around behaviour or student wellbeing issues.
The following leadership team members can be contacted to discuss queries, issues or concerns for your child across these year levels:
Kinder/Prep: Alison Norris
Year 1-2: Belinda Harback
Year 3-4: Dorothy Raymond
Year 5-6: Ben Slade
For queries about student support, please contact Tash Bannerman
School Priorities 2024
Staff participated in professional learning prior to students returning to school and will continue to develop their knowledge and skill through regularly learning together during the year. Our 2024 school priorities of reading and student wellbeing will be our focus. Staff have been developing further knowledge and skill in the explicit teaching of reading. Consolidation and review of our positive behaviour support strategies, engaging students in learning and support to improve attendance will be the centre of our student wellbeing focus.
School Athletics Carnival for Years 3-6
Our Health and Physical Education teacher, Mr Daft, is organising our school athletics carnival for Friday 8th March. This is advance notice for parents and carers to support you to save the date to come along. For our Year 3 students, this will be the first time that they have been able to take part in activities offered on this day. All students are encouraged to ‘have a go’ and participate. Further information will be in our next newsletter.
Brighton Primary School Association
Our School Association works together to promote and provide a positive environment at our school. It includes parents, school staff and community working with the school’s Principal to support learners and to benefit the school community. Our School Association fosters co-operation between staff, students, parents and community, reviews school policies and assists with fundraising. Meetings are held once per term and all parents are warmly invited to attend.
Annual General Meeting
Notice is given that the Annual General Meeting of the Brighton Primary School Association will be held on Monday 18th March at 4:30 in the School Admin Block. This meeting will see reports presented on School Association activities and school progress from 2023, and, put in place our 2024 School Association Committee. There will also be election of office bearers for 2024.
Nomination forms for parent representatives and community representatives on the Committee will be available from the School Office from early next week.
National Student Wellbeing Program (NSWP) Funding
During Term 4 last year, our School Association partnered with school staff to apply for National Student Wellbeing funding. The National Student Wellbeing Program (NSWP) supports the wellbeing of students and school communities through pastoral care services and student support strategies. We are pleased to share that Brighton Primary was successful in receiving funding and that this will support a School Chaplain to work at school for three days a week this year. The funding is for 2024 – 2027.
Brighton High School
As I was driving back into Brighton to prepare for the start of the school year, it was obvious that much progress had been made on the Brighton High build over the summer. In 2025, our current Year 6’s will be the first students who are able to attend Brighton High for Year 7. Brighton High has already had a Principal selected. Megan Bennell will be in this role and make regular visits to our school during this year to share updates with our community and to get to know our Year 6 students. Megan will make her first visit to our school next week. We look forward to sharing further information with you as we look forward to Brighton High opening in 2025.
